Hi there, I am Sharon, a curious Scientist and Jewelry designer. I create unique jewelries to celebrate Science, Nature, and the diverse people in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).

I got my inspiration from Science and Nature for they are timeless and full of wonder and beauty! My designs are also inspired by those diverse and innovative people, especially women in STEM, by their ingenuity, and by their passion and accomplishment.

I believe jewelry not only elevates our look but also expresses who we are and how we want to be connected to the world. Though each piece of 12 Dalton jewelry has an interesting story behind it, the most fascinating story is always your own! I am so grateful for being able to design this piece for you to tell your story and express yourself, and for you to feel unique, beautiful, and empowered.

A little more about me: I graduated with a Ph.D. in Polymer Science from Georgia Tech. I have been living in Houston and working as a research scientist in a chemical company since 2008. Growing up in a Scientists family, my curiosity for science, art, and entrepreneurship has never stopped. I founded 12 Dalton because I want to spread the joys and wonders of science.

“12 Dalton” is named after an incredible element, Carbon.

An artistically mesmerizing building block, Carbon, reflecting Science, arts, and wonder turned out to be the sole representative for generating 12 Dalton.

Carbon serves as the standard relative to which the atomic weights of all the other elements are measured. The atomic weight of carbon -12 is 12 Dalton, hence the brand name.

Carbon is such an artistic and fascinating building block. In nature, you will find pure carbon as soft and black graphite, or hard and shining diamond, with just different arrangement in the carbon atoms. From the lab, fullerene, carbon nanotube and graphene are the playful creation of Scientists who adore carbon as their play blocks.

Starting 12 Dalton has been the most rewarding experience – the process of articulating a Science concept into something physical and beautiful is just so fulfilling. My design is aimed to achieve the perfect balance of elegance and ease, while also provoking conversation. Each 12 Dalton jewelry piece is thoughtfully designed for versatile everyday wear - from work, to shopping, to having a coffee with a friend, to attending a conference or a party.

CAUSES I SUPPORT

I have found 12 Dalton as a jewelry brand with a mission to intensify the prominence of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in public perception. I have a strong urge to make STEM the epicenter of conversations where people talk about it out of curiosity with its altered cultural perception. 

I work with a few female-founded grassroots organizations that promote Girls in STEM and Girls’ Education. I hope that as the brand grows, my donations could make an impact in bringing more girls in schools and more girls into STEM majors.
